Media literacy for grown-ups

Thanks to the internet, the line between our personal and business lives have been blurred. Previously taboo office topics are being debated at the water cooler (err, on Slack) every day. Equip your team with the skills needed to understand what's going on in the world, avoid clickbait and misinformation, and to have respectful dialogue with colleagues who have diverse points of view.

About the course

The media has a huge influence over how we think about the world around us. They shape the conversations we have with people in our lives— at home, and at work.

In this course, participants will learn how to decode the media industry from the very people who helped create it. Over four group sessions, an experienced journalist will teach you all about how we got to where we are today—where a dog has more social media followers than the President. Where misinformation spreads more quickly than truth. Why and how the media is biased. And how to cut through the noise and get the information you’re looking for.

Takeaways

  • Understand how news is made
  • Deep dive into why the media industry is broken (and how to fix it)
  • Expertly spot misinformation and be able to check if a source is reliable
  • Clear idea of how social media and algorithms actually work
  • Determine what news is right for you (which outlets speak your language)
  • Media Bias 101
  • How research works

FAQs

What our students say

“‘Misinformation’ is one of those scary words I ignored for a long time. But now I can tell if something’s truthful in just a few minutes of research.

Melba

“We are bombarded with news all the time in this around the clock news cycle, and on top of that, everyone has opinions too. Knowing how to read, think and process all of it is an important skill to develop.”
