About the course

The media has a huge influence over how we think about the world around us. They shape the information that we use to make major decisions in our lives, from consulting Google about our health to reading the news to decide who to vote for.

In this course, participants will learn how to decode the media industry from the very people who helped create it. Over four group sessions, an experienced journalist will teach you all about how we got to where we are today—where a dog has more social media followers than the President. Where misinformation spreads more quickly than truth. Why and how the media is biased. And how to cut through the noise and get the information you’re looking for.

Takeaways

  • Understand how news is made
  • Deep dive into why the media industry is broken (and how to fix it)
  • Expertly spot misinformation and be able to check if a source is reliable
  • Clear idea of how social media and algorithms actually work
  • Determine what news is right for you (which outlets speak your language)
  • Media Bias 101
  • How research works
